Forspoken's side quests, called Detours, rope the player into conversations with NPCs where each line of dialogue is followed by a pregnant pause. Frey and Cuff's evolving relationship can even be quite endearing, but Forspoken's writing does still regularly elicit an eye roll.Īthia on a grand scale is fascinating and mysterious, but exploring its intricacies is often mired in unfortunate audio editing and typical open-world game drudgery. Although Forspoken's trailers were mercilessly roasted over this dialogue, the final product is not overbearing, and there's even an option to scale it back to narrative-important discussions only. The banter between the deuteragonists supplies a near constant stream of dialogue, which became a focal point of criticism in pre-release promotional footage. Frey begrudgingly helps the people of Cipal, hoping to find a way back to New York, but is quickly dragged into Athia's larger conflict with the Tantas. Cipal stands as the Athians' final refuge from the Break, an ever-encroaching, madness-inducing fog being spread by the four Tantas, powerful sorceresses who once benevolently ruled Athia, but have since had their minds corrupted. After a brief introduction to the dangers of a broken Athia, Frey and the sentient vambrace - nicknamed Cuff by Frey, the only person that can hear its disembodied voice - find themselves in Cipal, where the real story teased by Forspoken's final hands-on preview begins. ![]()
